The history of Lisbon Cathedral dates back to the 12th century. This cathedral began to be built in 1147 as a Romanesque church, shortly after Lisbon was taken from the Moors during the reign of King Afonso Henriques.

Connection with Portuguese royalty

Lisbon Cathedral is also known for its history and connection with Portuguese royalty. Lisbon Cathedral was the official church of the royal family for many centuries. It is also the place where many of Portugal’s kings and queens were crowned. The only secular people buried in Lisbon Cathedral are King Afonso IV and his wife Beatriz.

If you want to visit the Cathedral, you should know that Mass is celebrated every Sunday from 11:30am. Therefore, tourist visits are suspended on that day. However, be sure to check the price list for more details.

It is undoubtedly an excellent place to explore and appreciate its 800 years of history, as well as discover the building’s connection to Lisbon’s culture.
