MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology

Probably the most modern Portuguese museum

An innovative project that brings together a new building, designed by the architect Amanda Levete’s studio, and the Central Tejo, one of the national examples of industrial architecture from the first half of the 20th century, and one of the most visited museum centers in the country.

The MAAT seen from the Tagus River

The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) is a cultural institution located in Lisbon, which opened in 2016. It is dedicated to promoting critical discourse and creative practice with a view to eliciting new understandings about the historical present and a commitment responsible for the common future.

MAAT was designed by British architect Amanda Levete, internationally known for her innovative and futuristic approach. The building has a curved, fluid shape, with a glass roof that lets in natural light. The building’s façade is covered with white tiles that reflect the light projected onto them, giving it different shades depending on the time of day.

It is located on the waterfront in the historic area of Belém, in Lisbon, next to the Central Tejo.

It systematically presents exhibitions – national and international – with the contribution of contemporary artists, architects and thinkers, as well as events and educational programs.

The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology is a major tourist attraction and a visit to the museum is highly recommended for those wanting to learn more about contemporary art and architecture in Lisbon. In addition, visitors can relax and enjoy the environment in its leisure and rest areas, with impressive views of the Tagus River.
