The first air crossing of the South Atlantic began on March 30th, 1922, in the context of the commemorations of the First Centenary of the Independence of Brazil. It was carried out in a single-engine seaplane, equipped with a Rolls-Royce engine and specially designed for the trip. He was baptized as Lusit\u00e2nia.<\/p>\n

On the same day, they completed the first leg of the journey in Las Palmas, in the Canary Islands, despite noticing excessive fuel consumption.<\/p>\n\n
On April 5th, they left for the\u00a0Island of S\u00e3o Vicente, in the Archipelago of\u00a0Cape Verde, traveling 850 miles. There they stayed until April 17 for repairs to the seaplane \u2013 which was putting water in the floats \u2013 having departed from the port of Praia, on\u00a0Santiago Island, heading to the\u00a0Archipelago of S\u00e3o Pedro and S\u00e3o Paulo, in Brazilian waters, where they moored, without the aid of the wind, on the 18th.\u00a0As the sea was rough, it caused damage to the\u00a0Lusit\u00e2nia, which lost one of the floats. The aeronauts were collected by a\u00a0Cruiser\u00a0from the\u00a0Portuguese Navy<\/a>, who took them to\u00a0Fernando de Noronha. However, a new accident affected the aeronauts, when, having returned and flying over the S\u00e3o Pedro and S\u00e3o Paulo archipelago to restart the interrupted section, an engine failure forced them to land emergency, having remained shipwrecked for nine hours, until they were rescued. by an English freighter that was in transit in that region.<\/p>\n\n Returned to Fernando de Noronha, they waited until June 5th, when they were sent a new seaplane, baptized as\u00a0Santa Cruz. Transported by a ship from Portugal, it was placed in the water of the Archipelago of S\u00e3o Pedro and S\u00e3o Paulo. It was there that he took off to\u00a0Recife, making stops in\u00a0Salvador,\u00a0Porto Seguro,\u00a0Vit\u00f3ria\u00a0and from there to\u00a0Rio de Janeiro, then the Federal Capital, where, on\u00a0June 17th, 1922\u00a0he docked in front of\u00a0Ilha das Enxadas, in the waters of the\u00a0bay from Guanabara.<\/p>\n\n Enthusiastically hailed as heroes in all the Brazilian cities where they landed, the aeronauts had successfully completed the first crossing of the South Atlantic.
